Project Overview

Sigma Computing is one of Sutter Hill Ventures’ portfolio companies.

I was placed on this project during my residency at Sutter to help define product features and critical workflows. As a consumer-facing data manipulation tool, intuitive action flows are crucial in helping users understand what they can do with the raw data on hand and how they can do it.

Area of Focus

When I joined the team, some initial user interviews and pain point research have already been compiled. And a MVP has already been built. I worked closely with the founders and one other designer to dive directly into a few key areas to complete the missing features and improve the existing workflows.

Some of the areas I focused on:

  • Optimize On-boarding Flow

  • Exploration of the Panel Inspector

  • Friendlier Filter Feature

Exploration of the Panel Inspector

In the early versions of the product, all the table actions are done in the menu format, which had its limitations, such as preventing users to view the changes applied responsively and forcefully keeping users in a modal state etc. Introducing a panel inspector emerged as a solution to achieve a more fluid UX.

With the implementation of the inspector panel, it opened up all the possibilities to explore how people can interact and manipulate the data and its properties, and see the reflections inline.

We then developed sets of widgets as modular components to further expand the product’s capability, which in turn empowered the users to perform even more complex table actions and data manipulation.
